   b. 1936
   Film-maker
Hugh Hudson is a British film director who has become successful on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1975 he set up his own production company and directed Chariots of Fire (1981), a drama set against the background of the 1924 Summer Olympics. Partly funded by Dodi Fayed, it won an Academy Award as Best Picture of the year. The actress Andie McDowell made her debut in Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984). In 1987 Hudson raised Labour’s political vote through a personal profile dubbed ‘Kinnock: The Movie’. Lumière et Compagnie (1995) entailed inviting other film makers to use a restored Lumiere camera. His latest movie, World of Moss (1998), directed for producer David Puttnam, was well received in America.
